Constipation:Is That My Problem?

Constipation is defined as a decrease in the amount of stool a person produces and excretes. A constipated individual may also have difficulty passing excrement comfortably. Symptoms include an inability to pass waste, stomach upset, bloating and an overall feeling of discomfort. It can be challenging to diagnose constipation as each person’s habits are unique as well as the frequency of their bowel movements. An individual may suspect they are constipated if they have fewer movements than they would normally have. It is important to pay attention to day to day routines to see if there is a marked reduction or if it is difficult to pass waste.

Diagnosis

It can be challenging to pin down a diagnosis of constipation or if it is a more serious problem. It is recommended that you see a healthcare professional if you think you are suffering from constipation. It is also advisable to see your doctor if you have any other unusual symptoms above and beyond being constipated. The healthcare professional may choose to run a few tests, like a digital rectal exam. It may also be necessary for the doctor to order a colonoscopy. You should also make your doctor aware of any allergies you have before you begin any treatment program.

Treatment

Although constipation can be painful and disruptive to your life, it does not necessarily need medical intervention to fix. There are many simple constipation remedies to alleviate this issue. It is imperative that you confer with a doctor before starting any treatment program, even at home, to rule out any serious medical conditions. There are some products that are available over the counter that you can try to help out with this problem. One option is trying a natural laxative like mineral oil, castor oil or milk of magnesia.

If this issue is stemming from unhealthy eating habits than a simple dietary change incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables and more fiber can cure constipation. If immediate constipation relief is needed, an enema involving a suppository that introduces a saline solution in order to cause bowel contractions may be a necessary option. For severe cases, there are prescriptions available upon a doctor’s approval. In unusual occurrences, constipation can be related to more serious health conditions like certain colon disorders which would require surgery to relieve.
